Why We Should Applaud Bruce Jenner

Being in the Kardashian/Jenner clan can seem, from the outside, like a fantastic way to lead life. With money no problem, and celebrity parties wall to wall, it can easily be misinterpreted that they have it ‘easy’.

When Kim & Co’s and Kendall and Kylies real Dad Bruce Jenner split from Mum Kris, they powered through the amicable split and agreed to keep a united front for the kids.

After the split, the media speculated about Bruce Jenner’s changing appearance. For a track and field Olympic gold medalist, the changes to a more feminine look were obviously going to cause speculation.

Sporting longer hair and nail varnish invited not only media speculation but ridicule and abuse online. One magazine even put his head on a woman’s body and used it as the front cover. Unfortunately, Bruce has picked to put himself smack in the middle of a group that experiences the most prejudice in modern times. Although is most Western civilization homosexuality is now understood, Transgender-ism is still looked upon as ‘weird’.

Having no experience of either issue personally, I cannot begin to imagine what it is like to feel like you want to claw off your own skin because you are so uncomfortable in it. If we get the genetics we dislike for hair or eye colour, the problem can easily be fixed by dying our hair or wearing contacts, but if someone gets a gender they are not happy with, not only do they need to go through a grueling process ending with surgery, but also experience the scorn of people who do not understand.

When ‘People Magazine’ announced 2 days ago Bruce was making the transition into a woman, it invited a lot of backlash on social media sites. ( http://www.people.com/article/bruce-jenner-transitioning-woman ).

Unfortunately, not everyone understands what Bruce must of been going through having to live up to a masculine persona all of his life when he feels he should in fact, be a woman, and obviously understanding his privileged position means he will get a lot more attention for it than most.

Unsurprisingly, it seems from the article he has the support from all of his family, and has chosen to make his transition with them in mind, slowly, so that they can all get used to it.

When searching the hashtag ‘Bruce Jenner’ it’s obvious we are far from living in an age where people are accepting of things they don’t understand. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – Pitt have made a great start, by admitting their Daughter Shiloh is happier for now living as a boy – and more importantly – they are letting her.

All we can hope is that one day in our lifetimes, we will love in a world where if someone is a nice, kind person, people will accept them no matter what gender they chose to be.
