When I was invited along to see what a ‘Jack The Ripper Walk’ was all about, there was no way I was going to miss out. I’ve been saying I’ll do one for ages, and like having an eye test, and shaving the cat, never got round to it.

Jack The Ripper’s identity has STILL never been found, and it was the first case of a ‘serial killer’. Many have fallen into the frame of suspicion, even the Royal Family themselves. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the victims were all prostitutes who had a lot of male ‘companions’ it was terribly hard for them to narrow down everyone suspected. Also, a small technicality between it being ‘City of London Police’ or ‘Met Police’ hindered investigation of the last two killings, as they were both on the same night but fell under two different jurisdictions.

To this day ‘Ripperologists’ are still trying to figure out what happened, and who was responsible, and the fact that there were an incredible 40 people just on the one walk i went on goes to show people are still interested to this day.

The walk I went on, https://www.thejacktheripperwalk.com/ met at Aldgate East station which is REALLY easy to get to. This particular walk is quite well known for being one of the best. Make sure when you get to the station you are definitely on the right walk, you don;t want to get short changed with an inferior one do you?

The guide really did know loads, not just about Jack The Ripper himself but about living conditions and what things were like in the Victorian times. I’d definitely suggest this one if you want to really learn some stuff. Every stop we were taken around, they used a hand held projector to project pictures of what the streets looked like in the Victorian times, and also the victims bodies (this isn’t for the fainthearted). Over crowding was a problem in Whitechapel around the time of the murders, which didn’t help matters at all, as seeing loads of different people coming and going in the night was the norm.

There were loads of stops on the map, and I must say we did see a few other walks which looks no where near as good! It took about one hour and forty five minutes, and you land up quite close to an authentic Victorian pub which you can obviously go in after.

I had an absolutely fantastic time, and I really didn’t expect it to be as fun as it was. It was also really really interesting learning about living conditions in Whitechapel at the time. I love things about the Victorians anyway, and I can’t help but think this would go great with a day out at London Dungeons.
